Sunshine House, Inc., a new nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting homeless individuals and families in Shelbyville, announced it has received its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
This significant milestone, effective March 12, 2025, solidifies Sunshine House's commitment to fostering a supportive community environment and facilitating access to resources that promote self-sufficiency for those experiencing homelessness in the area.
Sunshine House was born from a deep-seated desire to address the critical needs of Shelbyville's homeless population. What began as a small group service project at the Salvation Army in 2016, evolved into a thriving community center offering a safe space, connection, and essential support, including coffee and conversation.
"We fell deeply in love with the people we serve," said Dyan Current, President and Incorporator of Sunshine House, Inc.. "Through our interactions, we recognized that beyond immediate needs, safe sleep and a sense of community are paramount. The closest shelter is in Greenfield, which for our clients, may as well be a million miles away. They want to be in their own community, surrounded by people they know and faces they trust."
In a press release about the tax-exempt statud, Sunshine House stated that it is dedicated to recognizing and affirming the inherent value and dignity of each person it serves, without discrimination for any reason.
With the official 501(c)(3) designation, Sunshine House, Inc. can now accept tax-deductible contributions and pursue grants, significantly enhancing its ability to achieve its mission. The organization plans to start as an overnight shelter and then expand to meet the evolving needs of its clients.
