Shelbyville Police warn of rental scam

The Shelbyville Police Department is warning residents about an increase in reported rental property scams over the past several weeks.

According to the Shelbyville Police Department scammers are copying legitimate rental listings from websites such as Facebook Marketplace, Zillow, and other rental platforms. They then repost the properties using fake contact information while pretending to be the property owner or manager.

These fraudulent listings are often advertised at prices lower than the legitimate listing to attract potential renters quickly. In several reported cases, the scammers requested deposits, application fees, or holding fees through payment apps such as CashApp before the victim was able to verify the property.

Shelbyville Police advise caution when searching for rental properties online.

Safety tips:
• Be suspicious of rental prices that seem too good to be true
• Never send money before verifying the property and owner
• Research the address and compare listings across multiple websites
• Avoid paying deposits or fees through CashApp, Venmo, gift cards, or wire transfers
• Ask to tour the property in person before making any payment
• Verify ownership or management information independently
