Enrollment in the Shelbyville Central Schools system continues to decline.
SCS Superintendent Dr. Matt Vance informed the school board during Monday’s meeting that the Oct. 1 head count totaled 3,595 students across the school system, which is down nine students from the 2024 count.
There are 22 virtual students.
Of the total student body, 19% are labeled as special education students while 12% are classified as ELL (English Language Learner).
Vance cited 2016 as peak enrollment for SCS. That year the count totaled 3,917 students – or 322 more students than in 2025.
In other board business Monday:
- SCS has reached a collective bargaining agreement with its teacher association. There will be a ratification meeting on Monday at 6 p.m. The Shelbyville Central Teachers Association has already approved the agreement, which will include base salary increases between $34 and $1,000. A stipend will ensure all eligible returning teachers receive a salary increase no less than $500. Under the agreement, the overall salary range for teachers will be between $47,725 and $90,000.
- Approved an increase to milk prices effective Jan. 1. Purchasing extra milk in the cafeteria will cost 60 cents in 2026 compared to 50 cents now. The price of milk increase is due to overall rising milk prices, according to Vance.
- Vance informed the board the roof project at Hendricks Elementary School is nearly complete. The project started during fall break. The roof project at Shelbyville Middle School is expected to be completed in late November.
