Pop culture celebration coming to downtown Shelbyville Saturday

A first-of-its-kind celebration is coming to downtown Shelbyville Saturday.

The inaugural Shelbyville Fandom Con will celebrate multiple genres of entertainment and will include music, comedy, video games, comics and horror as well as meet-and-greets for fans of all ages.

“It’s something for all,” said event creator Christopher McDonald, a Shelbyville native.

The event runs from 2 to 10 p.m. and costs $20 for adults and $10 for children over the age of two. The one-time entry fee offers fans the opportunity to celebrate:

• Harry Potter
• Horror
• Star Wars
• Anime
• Fallout
• Comics

Vendors and food trucks also will be on site.

The event also will use Blessings Opera House as the site for special guests including:

• Daniel Pesina, the original motion-capture actor for Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, and Johnny Cage in the original Mortal Kombat games
• Carlos Pesina, the original thunder god, gaming legend and the original motion-capture actor for Raiden in Mortal Kombat
• Jeff Brennan, legendary animator with credits including The Simpsons, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dragon Tales, Beavis and Butt-head Do America, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Extreme Ghostbusters and more.
• Rupert Boneham, the pop-culture legend from the television show Survivor

Also on site will be the Ecto-1 vehicle from Ghostbusters and a custom-built Iron Man Dodge Charger.

Elvis impersonator Ron Hobbs will be performing as well as Peace Cats, T3’s and DJ Bling.

There will be comedy performances from Hurricane Katrina and Nate Barnett.

There also will be a cosplay parade at 4:30 p.m. and a Shelbyville’s Got Talent competition at 7 p.m.

“Everyone is pretty excited,” said McDonald. “Everyone is excited it’s happening. This is something we want to do every year.”
