An 18-year-old Plymouth woman was arrested late Sunday night after allegedly stealing alcohol from Walmart and then consuming it in a nearby parking lot.

Just before midnight, Plymouth Police were notified of a possible alcohol theft at Walmart, with the caller reporting that an underage female had taken the alcohol and was actively consuming it at the former Penguin Point location near South Michigan Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Officer Witkowski responded to the scene and located the suspect at that location. A portable breath test administered to Kaleah Spelts, 18, of Pioneer Drive in Plymouth, confirmed the presence of alcohol in her system.

Spelts was taken into custody and transported to the Marshall County Jail, where she was booked on charges of theft/shoplifting and minor in possession of alcohol. She is being held on a $500 cash bond.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
