Plymouth School Board names Jeanne Tanner as new principal at Jefferson Elementary

The Plymouth School Board officially approved the hiring of Jeanne Tanner as the new principal of Jefferson Elementary School at Tuesday evening's board meeting.

Tanner is no stranger to the Plymouth Community School Corporation, having previously served within the district as both a classroom teacher and a Title I Instructional Coach. Superintendent Dr. Campbell praised the appointment, highlighting Tanner's deep roots in the community and her commitment to professional growth throughout her career.

"Tanner brings a strong connection to the Plymouth Community School Corporation, having previously served as both a teacher and Title I Instructional Coach," Dr. Campbell said. "Throughout her career, she has taken advantage of professional development opportunities, mentored new teachers, facilitated summer school, and continued to grow as an educator and leader."

Tanner's passion for educational leadership traces back to her own experience as a student in Plymouth, where she was shaped by outstanding teachers and principals — many of whom she later had the opportunity to work alongside as an educator herself. She described Jefferson as an intimate school with a close-knit staff and a strong sense of community and said she is eager to lead it.

"What excites me most about serving as principal of Jefferson Elementary School is the students," Tanner said. "I love kids and the individuality of each student. I look forward to watching each student grow academically, socially, and emotionally each and every day."

As she steps into her first year as principal, Tanner said her priorities will center on building relationships, celebrating Jefferson's existing strengths, and working to build upon them. Her leadership style is described as collaborative, consistent, and proactive, with an emphasis on active listening and maintaining an open-door approach for students, staff, and families alike.

Tanner also expressed enthusiasm for connecting with the broader Jefferson community, including working alongside the Jefferson PTO, community partners, and getting to know students both inside and outside the classroom.

"I hope that students feel safe, welcomed, excited, and encouraged as they enter the building each and every day," Tanner said. "When that happens, students begin to respond to instruction, develop ownership of their learning, and work to their potential."

Tanner also stressed the importance of a strong school-family partnership, encouraging families to remain active and engaged in their child's education.

"As parents, they are their child's first teachers," she said. "Together we can partner to create a positive, supportive, and engaging learning experience for every student."

Beyond academics, Tanner hopes to instill in students a strong sense of integrity and the ability to collaborate effectively with others. Above all, she said she looks forward to building meaningful relationships within the Jefferson community while honoring the school's traditions and identifying opportunities for continued growth.
