Rainfall from thunderstorms during the HVAC renovation project at Parkview Junior High School in Lawrenceville led to problems regarding asbestos removal at the school.
The rain caused a leak in the kitchen area onto the floor causing the tiles to become loose. Enviromental testing done on those tiles determined they contained asbestos. The Illinois Department of Public Health was notified and a plan for the abatement of the tiles was formulated and begun at the school.
During this process, Parkview students have been kept away from the kitchen and cafeteria areas since returning to school this week. Breakfast and lunch is being served daily by the school cooks, who prepare and cook the food at Parkside Elementary and then transported it to Parkview.
A firm timeline for the completion of the abatement project is not known. Additional information will be released by Unit 20 Superintendent Doug Daugherty.
