A Greenfield man was killed in a motorcycle - SUV crash Sunday.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office was called just after 5 p.m. Sunday to County Road 400 West and US 40 for a crash with a motorcycle and an SUV. The location is between Greenfield and Cumberland. Deputies called for the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team (F.A.C.Team) because of the severity of the crash.
The crash involved a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 2025 Chevrolet Equinox SUV.
The driver of the Harley Davidson was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Eric Edwards, 53, of Greenfield. A female passenger on the motorcycle, Donna Gross, 52, of Greenfield, was transported by ambulance to IU Methodist hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive. Neither person on the motorcycle was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the Equinox, Cheyenne Higsby, 18, of Greenfield, was not hurt in the crash and submitted to toxicology tests due to the severity of the crash.
According to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, the Equinox was traveling south on CR 400 West, then turned left (east) on US 40 into the path of the westbound Harley Davidson. The Equinox had a stop sign, the Harley Davidson did not. The driver of the Harley Davidson did not have time to avoid a collision and struck the Equinox, ejecting both people on the motorcycle.
The investigation is ongoing. The roadway was closed for a short time while officers from the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team investigated.
Officers from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Greenfield Police Department, Fortville Police Department, New Palestine Police Department, Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office, Hancock County Coroner’s Office, and Sugar Creek Township Fire Departments all assisted in this incident.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reminds all drivers to be aware of motorcycles on the roadways and encourages all motorcycle riders to wear helmets.
