Off-Duty Plymouth Police Officer arrests speeding driver on U.S. 30

An off-duty Plymouth police officer arrested a South Bend man Tuesday afternoon after clocking him driving nearly 40 mph over the speed limit on U.S. 30.

Shortly before 4 p.m. on February 24, the officer was driving a marked patrol vehicle westbound near King Road when he observed a vehicle approaching rapidly from behind.

According to police reports, the vehicle was weaving through traffic and passing multiple cars in a 50 mph zone. The officer confirmed the vehicle was traveling in excess of 87 mph.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as 25-year-old Jakyi Harris of South Bend.

Following a brief investigation, Harris was taken into custody and transported to the Marshall County Jail. He faces preliminary charges of misdemeanor reckless driving and operating a vehicle without financial responsibility with a prior conviction.

Charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed. Harris is presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and is entitled to be represented by counsel and to a trial by jury, at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
