Marshall County schools receive over $206,000 in secured School Safety Grants

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security has awarded more than $206,000 through Indiana's Secured School Safety Grant Program to Marshall County Schools. The Indiana Secured School Safety Board unanimously approved more than $26.9 million for 499 projects statewide.

Schools included in the local awards are:

Argos Community Schools – $37,388.50

Bremen Public Schools – $38,700.00

Culver Community Schools Corporation – $60,175.21

Plymouth Community School Corporation – $70,283.50

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security says requests for this year's program exceeded the amount of funding available. Schools receiving grants were funded at 86 percent for their highest-priority items.

Eligible uses of Secured School Safety Grant funding include school resource officers and law enforcement officers in schools, equipment and technology, active event warning systems, threat assessments and student and parent support services. The program also includes firearms training for teachers and staff at schools that choose to allow guns on school property.

Individual schools' uses of the awarded funds are not publicly available for security reasons.

The program provides matching grants, with schools required to provide a 25%, 50%, or 100% match depending on factors including enrollment, project cost, and what the funding request covers.

Nearly $242 million in state funding has been awarded through the Secured School Safety Grant Program since it was created in 2013.
