Lawrenceville to seek state sidewalk improvement grant

The Lawrenceville City Council has moved forward in the effort to obtain an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) grant for funding safe, continuous, ADA-compliant pedestrian routes for residents of all ages within the corporate city limits.

Thursday, September 24th during a special session, they adopted a resolution of support to provide 20% matching funds for the planned project. The city is making application for a maximum award of $5 million total to pay for new sidewalks spanning a three-mile-long area, ADA-compliant ramps, detectable warnings, and a median to the busy highway "Y" intersection of US-50 and State Street/West Haven Rd to give pedestrians a safe landing zone.

The move was made after a required public hearing for comment and a presentation of the scope of the work by Mitch Hardiek of the engineering firm of Milano and Grunloh (M&G) based in Effingham, the facilitator of the project.

The final application date is Monday, October 5th. A copy of the grant application will be available for public view during regular business hours at the Lawrenceville City Hall.
