The fiscal status of Lawrence County looks good in the future after the preliminary approval of an approximately $10.8 million budget by the county board this week.
They took the action after holding a public hearing on the proposed spending plan Wednesday, October 21st at the Lawrence County Courthouse.
It anticipates about $4.8 million in revenue with a surplus of about $32,000. This despite an appropriation of around $83,000 for the creation of a new Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) to assist local veterans and their families beginning in 2027-28
The tentative budget will be on public display for 30 days in the Lawrence County Clerk's Office before it is formally enacted by the board in November.
Also approved was a joint agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for the preliminary engineering on a federally funded road improvement project on the Sumner Blacktop south of the city. The work will involve asphalt shoulder work and rumble strips.
