Kokomo man killed in Monday crash

A Kokomo man was killed in a one-car crash on Monday.

Just after noon on Monday, deputies with the Howard County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Greentown Police Department were dispatched to the area of County Road 300 South and County Road 600 East in response to a report of a single-vehicle rollover crash. Initial reports indicated the occupant was unresponsive inside the vehicle.

Emergency personnel from the Greentown Fire Department and medics from Howard Regional Health responded to the scene with a GMC Sierra 1500 was located in a bean field on the north side of County Road 300 South. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver has been identified as Sean Curtis Paul, 48, of Kokomo. Preliminary investigation and witness statements indicate the vehicle was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway, entered a ditch and overcorrected. The truck then slid across the road, left the pavement again, and rolled multiple times before coming to rest in the field. Witnesses estimated the vehicle’s speed to be over 100 miles per hour prior to the crash.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this crash.

The sheriff’s accident reconstructionist documented the scene using both ground-level photography and aerial mapping via drone. A two-dimensional orthomosaic map of the crash site is being generated, along with a point cloud, to assist with the ongoing crash reconstruction.

An autopsy was conducted later that afternoon by a forensic pathologist at the Howard County Coroner’s Office. The cause and manner of death are pending autopsy and toxicology results. The Coroner’s Office notified the decedent’s next of kin prior to the public release of his identity.
