ISP investigating officer-involved shooting in Miami County

One suspect has been shot by police in Peru after reportedly brandishing a firearm toward law enforcement.

The Indiana State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on State Road 19 in Peru.

On Jan. 7, shortly after 8:30 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call reporting a subject allegedly banging on windows at a residence on State Road 19, north of U.S. 24. Miami County Dispatch received additional information indicating that the subject allegedly feared for their life.

When officers arrived at the scene, they made contact with the individual who had been reported as banging on the windows. After speaking with this individual, officers gathered information that led them to a nearby trailer in the 1600 block of State Road 19.

As officers approached the trailer, they encountered a subject outside of it. Officers attempted to give verbal commands, but the subject brandished a firearm toward law enforcement. At that time, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual.

Officers immediately rendered medical aid, and the subject was transported to a hospital in the Fort Wayne area. The subject remains hospitalized and is currently receiving treatment for their injuries.

Two additional individuals remained barricaded inside the trailer. Officers quickly established a perimeter, and the Indiana State Police SWAT team, along with hostage negotiators, responded to the scene. Negotiators successfully made contact with the two individuals, who exited the residence without incident. One of those individuals was later identified to be Tisha Medina.

Medina was found to have an active warrant for her arrest out of Cass County for the following offenses: Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 5 felony; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor. 

During the investigation, a firearm was located at the front of the trailer in the area where the suspect was detained.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation being conducted by the Indiana State Police Lafayette District Criminal Investigation Division. The information being released at this time is based on a preliminary investigation and is subject to change as more details become available. Upon completion, the findings will be submitted to the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

In accordance with Indiana State Police policy, the trooper who discharged their firearm has been placed on administrative leave. No other injuries were reported during the incident.
