Indiana Governor Mike Braun Monday ceremonially signed HEA 1001, legislation aimed at increasing housing production in Indiana.
“Affordability is this administration’s top priority, and affordable housing is central to that mission. For too many Hoosiers, homeownership is feeling further out of reach. Eliminating red tape and making it easier to build more homes will enable more Hoosiers to become homeowners.” - Governor Mike Braun
The law requires local governments to evaluate barriers to new housing and report on their progress. The law directs every city, town, and county to hold a public hearing this year on ways to expand housing supply, including reducing or eliminating certain parking mandates for multifamily housing, permitting smaller lots and higher density, and reconsidering aesthetic and design regulations that can add cost and delay.
Local units will also be required to submit annual housing progress reports to the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, allowing the state to better understand how regional housing markets are responding to the need for more homes.
Governor Braun’s READI 2.0 program has been creating new opportunities to build more housing, including a recent development in Gibson County where a $2 million state investment unlocked over $14 million in private capital to build 110 new apartments to the community.
