Indiana Gov. Mike Braun is making career opportunities in the trucking industry more accessible to Hoosier veterans.
Under Gov. Braun's leadership, Indiana joined the Even Exchange Program, which allows the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to waive Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) testing for qualified military personnel. The Even Exchange program is a part of the Trump administration’s Freedom Haulers campaign, allowing certified veterans with applicable military specialties to exchange their military license for an Indiana CDL.
Coupled with the BMV’s Military CDL Skills Waiver Program, Hoosier veterans with applicable military driving credentials can now more easily transition into civilian trucking careers.
“Veterans bring proven skill, discipline, and invaluable experience from their military service to the workforce,” said Gov. Braun. "These initiatives cut unnecessary red tape and help those who have dedicated their lives to ensuring our freedoms put their experience to work in critical jobs right here in Indiana."
To qualify for the Even Exchange program, military personnel should have one of the following military occupational specialty or classification:
U.S. Army:
- 88M - Motor Transport Operator
- 92F - Fueler
- 14T - Patriot Launching Station Operator
U.S. Marine Corps:
- 3531 - Motor Vehicle Operator
U.S. Navy:
- EO - Equipment Operator
U.S. Air Force:
- 2TI - Vehicle Operator
- 2FO – Fueler
- 3E2 - Pavement and Construction Equipment Operator
To participate in the Even Exchange program, the following information must be submitted in person at a BMV branch:
- A completed “Application for Military CDL Skills Test Waiver” form
- Provide a copy of their DD214 or proof of current active duty
- Provide a letter from their commanding officer, on letterhead, stating the applicant has operated a CMV for one year immediately preceding military discharge
- Provide a copy of their military license
Details on the Military CDL Skills waiver can be found on here on the BMV’s website. Veterans who do not have one of the above classifications, can still apply for the skills test waiver. They would still need to complete the CDL knowledge test to obtain their license.
