The Lawrenceville Indians jumped on top early and went on to beat Carlyle 34-12 in the home opener Thursday night at Ed Loeb Field.
The win snapped an overall 12-game losing skid for the football program dating back to 2023, which included a 0-9 season in 2024.
The Tribe led 7-0 after one quarter, 14-6 at the half and 21-6 after three quarters enroute to evening their record at 1-1 in non-conference play.
Nick Moorehead scored on a 1-yard run, Zander Cessna hauled in a touchdown catch from starting quarterback Issac Vennard, Zach Coffey ripped off a 61-yard scoring run, Jacek Mickiewicz caught a TD pass from backup quarterback Blayton Gossett and Tucker Waldrop scored from 2 yards out to account for the Indian scoring on the night.
The Indians also won despite making five turnovers.
The squad will remain at home to begin Little Illini Conference play Sept. 12 when it hosts the defending conference champion Richland County (Olney) Tigers at Loeb Field with kickoff at 7 p.m. (CST).
