Residents of Marshall County are being urged to prepare for dangerously low temperatures as the National Weather Service (NWS) issues a Cold Weather Advisory for the region.

The advisory is in effect from 11:00 p.m. tonight until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Forecasters expect wind chill values to drop as low as 20 degrees below zero during the overnight and early morning hours.

At these extreme temperatures, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Health and safety officials recommend that anyone who must be outdoors wear appropriate layers, including a hat and gloves, to prevent cold-related injuries.

In addition to personal safety, the following precautions are recommended:

  • Travel Safety: Drivers should exercise caution, as extreme cold can affect vehicle performance and battery life. Ensure your vehicle has an emergency kit if traveling late at night.
  • Pet Protection: Bring pets indoors and ensure livestock have adequate shelter and unfrozen water sources.
  • Home Safety: Take steps to prevent frozen pipes and ensure space heaters are used safely and kept away from flammable materials.
