A multi-vehicle collision occurred Tuesday morning on U.S. 31 South near the 230-mile marker, south of LaPaz, resulting in one driver being transported to the hospital with injuries. The accident involved a passenger vehicle, a pickup truck, and an oversize trailer.
At approximately 8:54 a.m. on Tuesday, emergency services were dispatched to the scene. According to preliminary reports from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, a 2010 Chevy Impala, driven by Adam Z. Scott, 26, of Rochester, was traveling southbound on U.S. 31. Traffic ahead was slowing due to a wrecker recovering a vehicle.
Scott's vehicle reportedly struck the rear of a 2013 GMC Pickup Truck, driven by Carl G. Jenkins, 71, of South Whitley. The pickup truck was escorting an oversize trailer. Following the initial impact, both the Impala and the pickup truck then struck the rear of the oversize trailer, coming to rest in the roadway.
Carl G. Jenkins, the driver of the pickup truck, was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for a possible back injury.
Responding agencies included LaPaz Fire Department, LaPaz EMS, Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Transportation, and the Marshall County Police Department.
This incident serves as a critical reminder for all drivers to maintain a safe following distance and remain attentive to changing traffic conditions, especially when approaching areas where emergency personnel or wreckers are present.
