The Shelbyville Common Council approved a 10-year tax abatement Monday for Plastic Moldings Company, LLC.
PMC, 1451 S. Miller Avenue, is adding a new micro-molding press, conveyor, robot and other support equipment at a cost of $322,412.92.
The equipment is expected to be installed by July. No new employees will be hired at this time but the new equipment allows PMC to improve production of micro-molded components used in the automotive and medical industries which could lead to hiring more staff.
PMC currently employees 158 men and women on the city’s west side.
In other council business Monday, a new city Building Department was created to stand separately from the Planning Department.
Deputy Building Commissioner Chris Hext (photo) was named the director of the new Building Department.
Hext was sworn into office Tuesday morning by Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson at the Board of Works and Public Safety Meeting. He has worked for the City of Shelbyville since 2008.
“The way we operated, the building department was kind of separate anyway. We had building inspectors. I was never on a job site doing that. It will be shifting all those responsibilities, the inspection, permitting, building code compliance to Chris Hext,” said Adam Rude, city Plan Director. “The actual operations is not going to change much, it’s just separating them out a little bit and elevating (Hext) to that role.”
Also at the Board of Works meeting Tuesday morning at City Hall, Billy Leffler was sworn in as new director of the Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter.
