City of Shelbyville issues flood emergency update: mandatory evacuations and shelter information

As of 6:00 p.m., the City of Shelbyville continues to respond to escalating flood conditions on both the Big Blue and Little Blue Rivers. Emergency crews are working around the clock to evacuate vulnerable areas and provide support to residents in need.

The Big Blue River is currently measuring 17.77 feet, nearing Major Flood Stage, which begins at 18.1 feet. The river is expected to crest at this level at approximately 2:00 a.m. tomorrow. The historic record for the Big Blue River stands at 20.2 feet.

The Little Blue River has now exceeded its historical crest of 12.9 feet, with current levels reaching 13.06 feet, placing it well into Major Flood Stage.

Due to these rising water levels and forecasted conditions, evacuations are now in effect for the following areas:

• Walkerville

• South side of the Big Blue River, including Indiana Avenue and Eastern Avenue

• Walnut Grove Campground off of London Road

River Road is officially closed. No traffic will be let through.

The Shelbyville Fire Department, in partnership with the Shelbyville Police Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Indiana State Police, is leading these evacuation efforts. Multiple city departments are supporting rescue and response operations amid a high volume of emergency calls and limited resources.

Residents in impacted areas are urged to evacuate early and relocate to the designated emergency shelter:

Sandbags Available

Sandbags are available to residents on a first come, first served basis outside of the City of Shelbyville Street Department, located at:
605 Hale Road, Shelbyville, IN 46176. Citizens are asked to take no more than 15 at a time to allow for maximum use.

Public Safety Message

Residents are strongly urged to stay out of flooded areas, whether by vehicle, on foot, or for the purpose of taking photos. These actions endanger lives and delay the ability of emergency crews to provide timely and effective aid.

“Our teams are doing everything possible to keep people safe, but we need the community’s help,” said Bradley Rund, Shelbyville Fire Department Lieutenant. “If you're in a flood-prone area, evacuate now. If you're not in immediate danger, stay clear of flooded roadways and let our emergency responders do their work.”
