Child killed in Rush County house fire

An autopsy is being held to determine the exact cause of death following a Thursday fatal fire in Rush County.

The Rush County Sheriff’s Department dispatch center received a report of a house fire in the 2000 block of North County Road 700 West in Arlington. The house was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived. They were told there was a child in the home. Attempts to save the child were unsuccessful and the child was pronounced dead by the Rush County Coroner.

Rush County Detective Randy Meek says the cause and manner of death, along with origin of the fire remain under investigation.

Agencies involved included the Posey Township Fire Department, Carthage Volunteer Fire Department, Manilla Volunteer Fire Department, Rushville Township Volunteer Fire Department, Rushville Fire Department, Rush County Emergency Management, Indiana State Fire Marshal, Rush County Coroner and Rush County Sheriff’s Department.
