AT&T seeking info about copper thieves, internet outages

The theft of copper cable has led to outages including the southwest side of Indianapolis last week that caused many to be without internet.

A reward is being offered to catch copper cable thieves that are disrupting internet services in Shelby and other counties.

AT&T is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to arrests involving ongoing reports of theft and vandalism. The theft of copper cable has led to outages including the southwest side of Indianapolis last week that caused many to be without internet.

“Copper theft often damages our critical communications infrastructure, which can cause network outages that leave our customers without the ability to connect,” AT&T Indiana President Bill Soards said in a written statement.

AT&T is working with law enforcement in Marion, Brown and Shelby counties.

Tipsters can remain anonymous. Anyone with information should contact their local law enforcement. You can also contact the AT&T global security and investigations line at (800) 807-4205. The information must be received by May 18 in order to qualify for the reward.
