Each May, our country recognizes the dedication and sacrifices of those who have served in the Armed Forces, as well as those currently wearing the uniform. As your state representative, I want to personally thank the veterans, active-duty members and military families across our community for their service to our nation.
National Military Appreciation Month, established by Congress, is more than a symbolic recognition — it's a time for all Americans to reflect on the courage, commitment and sacrifice of our military heroes.
This session, I was proud to support legislation aimed at improving the lives of service members, veterans and their families. This includes efforts to:
- Boost benefits for members of the Indiana National Guard and strengthen support for military spouses and dependents (HEA 1111)
- Modernize military recognition in our state and expand eligibility requirements and opportunities for those who have served (HEA 1637)
- Ensure Hoosier veterans have streamlined access to the assistance and support they deserve by improving county veteran service officers (SEA 433)
If you or someone you care about is a veteran or in a military family, there are many resources available right here in our community. The Henry County Veterans Service Office, located at 101 S Main St. in New Castle, assists with VA claims, benefits navigation and other services. In Shelby County, the Shelby County Veterans Affairs Office is based at 25 W Polk St. in Shelbyville and offers one-on-one help for veterans accessing both state and federal support.
Additional resources include the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs for benefits and claims support, the VA Indiana Healthcare System for medical services and Indiana National Guard Family Programs for family readiness and counseling.
Veterans can also explore career opportunities through the Next Level Veterans employment program or find local assistance through their county’s Veterans Service Officer. My office is open year-round to help guide you through these options and more by visiting in.gov/h54 or calling 317-232-9850.
Let’s take time this month to thank those who serve, honor those who have fallen and support those who stand beside them.
