Smith blasts two home runs to propel Class 3A, No. 10 Shelbyville to HHC win

It took five innings for Shelbyville’s offense to figure out Pendleton Heights’ Jackson Maifield. The senior held the unbeaten Golden Bears scoreless through four innings Tuesday at Barnett Field and the Arabians led 3-0.

Then Shelbyville exploded for seven runs, including an Aiden Smith grand slam that propelled the Golden Bears to a 10-4 victory. The home run was timely and record-breaking. It gave Smith the Shelbyville baseball career hits record (108), surpassing Dalton Jones’ mark set last season.

Austin Martzall had a home run in the sixth inning and Smith followed with a solo home run to cap the Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.

In seven games this season, Smith, a University of Kentucky recruit, is hitting .609 with four home runs and 14 RBIs. The senior earned the win on the mound (3-0), pitching six innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out 10.

Martzall pitched the seventh inning and allowed one hit and one unearned run.

Colin Axel-Adams had two this, including a third-inning home run, and two RBIs for Pendleton Heights (5-4, 2-2 HHC).

Shelbyville (7-0, 4-0 HHC) will go for the HHC sweep today in Pendleton and a program record eighth win without a loss to start a season.
