Prep Report: Shelbyville's Garrison and Stenger qualify for IHSAA golf regional tournament

Shelbyville girls golf missed the regional cut by 14 strokes but qualified two golfers as individuals for the IHSAA regional tournament in Franklin.

Competing in the Greensburg Sectional Saturday at the Greensburg Country Club, the Golden Bears’ 398 left them behind Batesville (346), Greensburg (362) and Franklin County (384).

Batesville’s Stella Maple was crowned sectional champion with a round of 79 (+9).

Julie Garrison’s 85 and Hana Stenger’s 99 advanced the Golden Bears to the regional tournament along with North Decatur’s Mary Stier (95).

Southwestern finished 11^th overall in the team standings at 503.

Also competing for Shelbyville were Sophia Bragg (103), Harper Adams (111) and Lillian Huesman (118).

Southwestern’s scorecard included Kaylee Pike (112), Izzy Andrews (128), Georgie Taggart (131) and Addalyn Johnson (132).

Garrison (photo, left) and Stenger (photo, right) will compete on Sept. 26 in the Franklin Regional held at The Legends Golf Course.

Cross Country

Golden Bear Invitational

At Blue River Memorial Park’s cross country venue, a total of 16 teams were split into two divisions: Black (large school) and Golf (small school).

Shelbyville’s American Leon finished seventh in the Black division in 21 minutes, nine seconds.

Also competing for Shelbyville were Macey Robbins (17^th in 21:55), Harper Kinsey (38^th in 24:06), Kat Seal (48^th in 24:44), Anne Marie Fansler (54^th in 25:22), Belle Orem (59^th in 26:15), Claire Kamplain (62^nd in 26:51), Brandi Santiago-Mendoza (77^th in 31:21), Piper Brown (80^th in 33:40) and June Meltzer (82^nd in 35:40).

Morristown had five runners compete in the Gold division. Audrey VanDyke led the Yellow Jackets with a 13^th-plac finish in 22:17.

Also running were Lauren Kuhn (23^rd in 23:32), Brooke Kuhn (34^th in 25:11), Emma Oster (52^nd in 29:37) and Madison Richardson (55^th in 30:12).

Audrey Morris (40^th in 26:00) and Lillian Siegel (60^th in 38:32) represented Triton Central.

Southwestern’s Adalyn Brewer finished 47^th in 26:54.

In the Black division boys race, Shelbyville’s Shia Veach finished third overall in 16:45. Eden Ortega also had a top 15 performance, placing 12^th in 18:00.

Also competing for Shelbyville were Anderson Mollenkopf (38^th in 19:37), Kendryk Pike (41^st in 19:39), Elliot Wung (58^th in 21:05), Kamden Turner (62^nd in 21:14), Tanner Jones (71^st in 22:02), Eli Davis (75^th in 22:18), James Melvin (78^th in 22:48), Jackson Garrett (80^th in 22:51), Everett Stegemiller (84^th in 23:44), Victor Quiros Menez (91^st in 27:36) and Jacob Craig (92^nd in 29:15).

Competing for Morristown were Jason Tweedy (42^nd in 21:46), Donald Kuhn (62^nd in 24:40), Bradley Theobald (66^th in 26:04) and Evan Trittipo (67^th in 26:05).

Southwestern’s Jayden Thurston finished 63^rd (25:03) and Angus Taggart placed 69^th in 26:43).

Jason P’Pool led Triton Central with a 51^st place finish in 23:18. Also competing for the Tigers were Hudson Watson (57^th in 24:07), Braydyn Hart (64^th in 25:34), Max Tupper (70^th in 26:43) and Luke Starost (71^st in 27:18).

Boys soccer

Mid-Hoosier Conference Tournament

Hauser 1, Southwestern 1 (Hauser wins on PKs 9-8)

At Southwestern, the second meeting between the Jets and Spartans was a memorable one.

After a scoreless first half in the championship match, Southwestern’s Ethan Sipes and Hauser’s Kolton Grimes scored in the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Two overtime periods still did not determine a champion.

Southwestern goalkeeper Chandler Holt made a save on the Jets’ fifth attempt and the match was still tied at 3-all.

The two teams made four of five attempts in a second round of penalty kicks and the match continued.

After each team connected on their 11^th penalty kick, Hauser’s goalkeeper made a save on Southwestern’s 12^th attempt and the Jets converted to secure the inaugural conference tournament championship.

Hauser (9-3-1) made its final five penalty kick attempts.

Southwestern’s five match win streak came to an end. The Spartans are 7-3-2 this season.

Morristown def. Brown County in penalty kicks (5-4) in the third-place match to improve to 4-6-1. It was the second win for the Yellow Jackets over the Eagles this season.

Brown County fell to 1-5-1.

Girls soccer

Roncalli 3, Triton Central 0

At Triton Central, Selah Roach scored twice and Alex Dew had a goal to lead the Royals to the road victory.

Roncalli improved to 8-3-1.

Triton Central fell to 6-6.

Boys tennis

Shelbyville 4, Batesville 1

At Batesville, the Golden Bears improved to 10-1 in their last 11 matches by sweeping the doubles matches and adding singles victories from Bram Kolkmeier and Kody Sellers.

At No.1 doubles, Jack Van Wye and Cooper Reed improved to 10-6 this season with a 7-5, 6-2 win over William Patterson and Weston Peters.

Owen Shively and Grant Tackett pushed their No. 2 doubles mark to 12-4 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Elijah Doll and Coleman West.

Bram Kolkmeier secured his team-leading 14^th win of the season with a 6-2, 3-0 (retired) win over Carson Meyer and No. 2 singles.

Kody Sellers evened his No. 3 singles record at 5-5 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Max Walter.

Batesville’s Jevan Smith defeated Kashton Laycock at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Triton Central 4, Paoli 1

Triton Central swept all three singles matches in straight sets to secure the team victory.

Brayden Hoover, Bradyn Robinson and Drayton Kermode won their matches, and the No. 2 doubles team of Colton Ayres and Brylon Scott added a straight-set win at 6-2, 6-3.

The Tigers returned to the courts and defeated Floyd Central's junior varsity team, 5-0.

The No. 1 doubles pairing of Cask Eck and Graham Gast needed three sets to defeat Austin Frazer and Brent Townsend, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.

Mid-Hoosier Conference Championships

Waldron (photo) left little doubt who the best team is in the MHC. The Mohawks swept all five brackets to capture All-Conference honors for the team.

Charlie Fischer (No. 1 singles), Lincoln Fischer (No. 2 singles), Noah Leap (No. 3 singles), Jackson Kuhn and Caige Sheaffer (No. 1 doubles) and Owen Hartman and Wyatt Armstrong (No. 2 doubles) all finished unbeaten at the MHC event.

Volleyball

Lawrenceburg Invitational

Triton Central finished 2-1 at the invitational with its only loss coming to the host Tigers.

Triton Central opened the event with a 25-20, 25-16 win over Scott (Ky.). Lucy May had a team-high 10 kills to lead the Tigers. Kate Collier had seven kills and five service aces.

Lawrenceburg def. Triton Central, 27-25, 10-25, 15-10.

Triton Central then defeated East Central, 25-15, 25-15. May finished with a team-high eight kills. Ashlyn Hittle backed her with seven kills.

May broke the TC record for career kills during the invitational. She now has 921 kills.

Triton Central improved to 12-6 this season.
