Prep Report: Shelbyville running duo set school record at Plainfield Relays

Shelbyville cross country opened the season with a record-setting performance from America Leon and Macey Robbins.

At the Plainfield Relays in a Hokem Karem format, Leon (photo, left) and Robbins (photo, right), one following the other in a 3-mile run (six miles total per pair), finished 10^th overall (the best ever placement in the event for any Golden Bears) and broke the school record by nearly a minute.

The time for Leon and Robbins was 38:29, breaking the record set in 2024 by 57 seconds.

Also competing Saturday were Anne Marie Fansler and Kat Seal, who finished 42^nd overall in 46:35.

In the boys event, Shelbyville’s Shia Veach and Eden Ortega placed 20^th overall in 31:52. The time was the second fastest in school history.

Also finishing in the top 50 for Shelbyville were Anderson Mollenkopf and Kendryk Pike, who placed 46^th in 35:26.

Cross country

Jeremy Wright Invitational

At Blue River Cross Country Course in Shelbyville, Morristown’s Ryan Crisman was the top Shelby County finisher in the event hosted by Southwestern. Crisman place 42^nd overall with a finishing time of 19:43.

Also for Morristown, Jasen Tweedy finished in 22:49, Evan Trittipo crossed the finish line 26:15 and Donald Kuhn stopped the clock at 28:25.

Triton Central’s Jason P’Pool placed 168^th in 23:50. He was followed by Hudson Watson (25:22), Braydyn Hart (26:52) and Luke Starost (28:48).

Southwestern’s Maxmilian Wilson (25:47) and Samuel Wilson (25:53) finished nearly together. Jayden Thurston followed in 27:46.

In the girls race, Morristown’s Audrey VanDyke finished 22^nd overall in 23:43. Jo Kuhn followed in 24:44. Brooke Kuhn crossed the finish line 26:59. And Madison Richardson finished in 31:11.

Triton Central’s Audrey Morris placed 80^th in 27:12. Lillian Siegel crossed the finish line 38:28.

Adalyn Brewer led Southwestern with a time of 30:10.

Harrier Invitational

At Brown County, Jacob Kuhn led Waldron with a 45^th-place finish in 18:47.

Also competing for Waldron were Spencer Armstrong (21:13), Tad Crosby (21:42) and Wyatt Armstrong (23:45).

Waldron’s Sophia Meriwether ran the girls race in 28:09. Kassidy Meulen followed in 30:48.

Mooresville Fall Four Ball Invitational

At Heartland Golf Links Saturday, Shelbyville’s Julie Garrison and Sophia Bragg led the Golden Bears with a 90, eighth best in the Blue Division.

Hana Stenger and Harper Adams shot 93, sixth best in the Gold Division.

Lilly Huesman and Maddie Class finished at 122 in the Pioneer Division.

Jac-Cen-Del 224, Southwestern 274

At Timbergate Golf Course Friday, Claire Heilers shot 48 to lead the Eagles to the win over the Spartans and secure the medalist honor.

Maddie Bunnell followed with a 55 for Jac-Cen-Del.

Kaylee Pike led Southwestern with a 62.

Boys soccer

Tri-West 5, Shelbyville 1

At Tri-West Saturday, the host Bruins led 2-1 at halftime then scored three second-half goals to secure the Hoosier Legends Conference victory.

Caleb Hunt scored two goals to lead Tri-West (1-2, 1-1 HLC). Isaac Hull had a goal and two assists.

Shelbyville dropped to 2-1 (1-1 HLC).

Tri-West won the junior varsity game, 3-1.

Southwestern 2, Anderson Prep 2

At Southwestern Friday, Ethan Sipes scored early in the second half to stake the host Spartans to a 2-1 lead but Christian Ramirez collected his second goal of the contest midway through the half to secure the tie.

Ramirez tallied his first goal of the season in the game’s opening minutes.

Dusty Stevens scored off a Sipes assist with 9:12 to go in the opening half.

Southwestern is 1-1-1 this season.

Boys tennis

Eastern Hancock 3, Shelbyville 2

At Eastern Hancock, the host Royals won a three-set match at No. 2 doubles to defeat the Golden Bears.

Levi Stout and Evan Kinder defeated Owen Shively and Grant Tackett, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to follow a pair of singles victories.

At No. 1 singles, Luke Zeilinga blanked Shelbyville’s Kashton Laycock, 6-0, 6-0. And Cash Poindexter defeated Shelbyville’s Kody Sellers at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-3.

Shelbyville’s wins came from Bram Kolkmeier at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-1) and the No. 1 doubles pairing of Jack Van Wye and Cooper Reed (6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 10-7).

Connersville Invitational

Triton Central 4, Hagerstown 1

Triton Central’s doubles teams were dominant and the Tigers got strong performances in singles matches from Bradyn Robinson and Drayton Kermode.

At No. 1 doubles, Graham Gast and Colton Ayres defeated Collin Werking and Dawson Brown, 6-2, 6-3. Cash Eck and Owen Rice nearly matched that score with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Owen Williams and Carter Sullivan.

Connersville 4, Triton Central 1

Drayton Kermode won at No. 3 singles for Triton Central, 7-6 (1), 3-6, 11-9, to secure his team’s lone win.

At No. 1 singles, Anthony Struewing topped Brayden Hoover, 6-0, 6-2.

Jay McMullen bested Robinson at No. 2 singles, 5-7, 6-2, 10-4.

Evan Miller and Grady Stephens defeated Gast and Ayres at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-1.

Angelo Amora and Eli Laughlin produced a 6-1, 6-4 win over Eck and Rice.

Triton Central is 4-1 this season.

Volleyball

Covenant Christian Invitational

Triton Central split four matches at Covenant Christian, defeating the host Warriors (25-21, 25-10) and Herron (25-14, 25-8) while falling to Greenfield-Central (25-15, 25-20) and Guerin Catholic (25-17, 25-14).

Against Covenant Christian, Lucy May and Addison Gibbs each had a team-high five kills. Anna Kemper finished with 13 assists and three service aces.

Shelbyville def. Waldron, 25-12, 25-19, 25-18

At Shelbyville, Jordyn Noe collected 13 kills to lead the victorious Golden Bears. Annabelle Bringle followed with nine kills and Taylor Abell had eight kills and three aces.

Hayden Ricketts led the Golden Bears (2-1) with 11 digs. Setter Addy Marshall racked up 38 assists.

Waldron dropped to 1-3.

Morristown def. Brown County, 25-17, 25-17, 25-11

At Morristown, Brooklyn Carlton and Avery Everhart each had 14 kills to lead the Yellow Jackets (6-1).

Carlton also had a team-high 19 digs. Abby Hawk finished with 12 digs.

Addison Osborne led Morristown with 29 assists.
