Prep Report: Shelbyville baseball shuts out Delta

Class 3A, No. 11 Shelbyville stayed in contention for the Hoosier Heritage Conference title Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Delta at Barnett Field.

The Golden Bears (8-2, 5-1 HHC) pushed a run across the plate in the fourth and sixth innings and Luke Coomes secured the final out in relief of starter Reece Prickett to secure the victory.

Prickett allowed five hits and one walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out four. Coomes faced just one batter to get the save.

Delta dropped to 7-6 (4-5 HHC) with the loss. The Eagles host Shelbyville today.

The Golden Bears trail Greenfield-Central (10-5, 6-1 HHC) in the conference standings.

Baseball

Morristown 13, Irvington Prep 0

At Irvington Prep, a five-run first inning was more than enough run support for Michael Ballinger. The senior limited the Ravens to three hits and struck out eight in the shutout victory.

Owen Rinzel had a triple and three RBIs for Morristown (3-6). Cole Helton had two hits, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Mason Bentley scored three runs.

Irvington Prep dropped to 6-6.

Morristown hosts Edinburgh (2-10) Thursday.

Rushville 10, Waldron 0

At Waldron, a six-run fourth inning allowed the Lions to finish off the Mohawks in five innings.

Josh Cowan had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for Rushville (4-7). Kaceik Lunsford had three RBIs. Trent Smith and Grant Cameron each drove in two runs.

Carter Woolf and Lunsford combined to limit the Mohawks to one hit and three walks. Woolf earned the win, pitching three innings and striking out five.

Hunter Dodson took the loss for Waldron (6-6).

The Mohawks travel to South Decatur (9-3) Thursday.

Monrovia 9, Triton Central 8, 10 innings

At Monrovia, the Tigers scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning but the Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom half to steal the Hoosier Legends Conference victory.

Six different Monrovia players had two hits. Eli Hampton had two doubles and scored twice. Jack Kluemper had a solo home run.

Freshman Nash Durbin took the loss for Triton Central (4-7, 3-4 HLC). Kellan Dishman had a home run and three RBIs.

Monrovia (4-6, 2-5 HLC) travels to Fairland Friday for the second game of a two-game series.

Softball

Shelbyville 10, Greensburg 1

At Greensburg, the Golden Bears scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the third and were never challenged in improving to 9-7.

Shelbyville had just six hits in the win but took advantage of 16 walks and two batters hit by a pitch. Hailey Maulden, Reagan Dillon and Gracie Crafton each had two RBIs.

Crafton pitched a complete game to improve to 4-6 this season. She allowed three hits and struck out 11.

Shelbyville hosts Class 3A, No. 5 New Palestine (9-3) Thursday.

Morristown 14, Providence Cristo Rey 0

At Morristown, Abby Hawk threw a no-hitter and struck out 15. The Yellow Jackets scored nine runs in the first inning to improve to 4-5.

Providence Cristo Rey fell to 0-5-1.

Chloe Longwell, Scarlett Hicks and Hawk each had three RBIs.

Morristown hosts Edinburgh (11-4) Thursday.

Monrovia 2, Triton Central 1

At Monrovia, Triton Central was held scoreless until the seventh inning and could not complete the comeback.

Ashlyn Hittle had two hits and drove in the only run for the Tigers (7-5, 5-2 HLC).

Madi Peterson took the loss, allowing eight hits and two walks. 

Monrovia (5-9, 3-4 HLC) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Harlow Toole pitched six innings and allowed four hits and no runs to earn the win.

Monrovia is in Fairland Friday night for the second game of the two-game series

Girls tennis

Trinity Lutheran 4, Waldron 1

At Waldron, the No. 1 doubles pairing of Emerson Lindsey and Jackie Corlett stayed unbeaten (9-0) with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Taylor Kramer and Valerie McIntosh.

At No. 1 singles, Trinity Lutheran’s Presley Meyer defeated Riley Thurston, 6-4, 6-1.

Liza Vaughn needed three sets to top Waldron’s Ava Leising at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Kate Malone completed the singles sweep for Trinity Lutheran with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Leah Kuhn.

At No. 2 doubles, Waldron’s Hannah Rouse and Madeline Walker lost 7-5, 6-1 to Clara Rubin and Emily Keller.

Boys track and field

Columbus North 89, East Central 64, Shelbyville 14

At Columbus North, Joaquin Delgado and Eli Davis had runner-up performances for Shelbyville.

Delgado finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.99) and Davis was second in the high jump (5-6). Davis also helped produce a second-place finish in the 1,600 relay (3:39.28) with Josue Isaac, Shane Owens and Kamden Turner.

Other top four finishers for Shelbyville were Anderson Mollenkopf (fourth in 3,200 in 11:01.02), Owens (fourth in high jump at 5-4), and Ethan Griffin (fourth in shot put at 45-1; third in discus at 143-5).

Girls track and field

Columbus North 95, East Central 44, Shelbyville 28

At Columbus North, Amara Lewis and Sonora O’Connor were event winners for Shelbyville.

Lewis won the 100 in 12.97. O’Connor bested the field in the long jump (16-9). O’Connor also finished runner-up in the 100 hurdles (16.13).

Shelbyville finished second in the 1,600 relay (4:12.3) with Jordyn Noe, Alyna Castanon, Macey Robbins and O’Connor; and second in the 400 relay (51.9) with Mary O’Connor, Diana Gasca, Ogunmoyela and Lewis.

Also producing top four finishes were Noe (fourth in 100 hurdles in 17.7; third in high jump at 5-0), Wuraola Ogunmoyela (fourth in 100 in 13.34), O’Connor (third in 300 hurdles in 47.97), Robbins (third in 800 in 2:26.98) and Haylee Barnes (fourth in pole vault at 8-0).
