Prep Report: Offensive explosion leads to another Shelbyville softball win

For the second time in three days, Shelbyville softball scored at least 10 runs in an inning to collect a win.

The Golden Bears trailed at Franklin Thursday, 8-4, after five innings then scored four runs in the sixth and 10 runs in the seventh for an 18-13 victory.

June Murdick improved to 5-0 for the Golden Bears after pitching the final 2.1 innings in relief of Anna Newhouse, who was making her first varsity pitching start. The sophomore allowed nine hits and four walks while striking out five in 4.2 innings.

Shelbyville (8-6) scored four runs in the sixth inning off Franklin freshman Mylah Neville, also making her first varsity start, to tie the game.

In the seventh, Franklin (8-3) needed three pitchers to finally shut down the Golden Bears, who scored 10 runs on seven hits (three doubles), three walks and two hit-by-pitches. Hailey Maulden and Lexi Rogers each had two-run doubles in the inning.

Gracie Crafton had five hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs. Rogers had four hits and scored three runs. Addison Wooten drove in five runs.

Shelbyville has scored 45 runs in its last two games, which includes a 17-run inning Tuesday in its 27-23 win over Connersville.

The Golden Bears host Class 3A, No. 2 Yorktown (11-0) Saturday for its annual “Pink Out” game.

Baseball

Hauser 9, Waldron 1

At Waldron, Kameron Blair allowed three hits and one walk while striking out 11 Mohawks to get the Jets the Mid-Hoosier Conference victory.

Stryker Gill had a home run and a sacrifice fly to lead the Jets with three RBIs. R.J. Foster had two hits and scored three runs.

Jackson Kuhn took the loss for Waldron. He pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, striking out nine and allowing nine runs (only two were earned).

The Mohawks (6-5, 2-1 MHC) travel to Hauser (5-2, 4-1 MHC) today to complete the conference series.

Boys golf

Columbus North 147, New Palestine 164, Shelbyville 182

At Harrison Lake Country Club, Columbus North’s Reid Perry, Owen Sullivan and Austin Perry each shot 1-over-par 36 to secure the win.

Southwestern 184, Morristown 213, Indianapolis Lutheran 218

At Timbergate Golf Course, the Spartans secured a pair of match wins against the Yellow Jackets and Saints.

Softball

Hauser 14, Waldron 0

Hauser 17, Waldron 3

In a MHC doubleheader Wednesday, the Jets scored nine runs in the first inning of both games.

In the opener, Karlieann Viewegh and Kinley Krise combined to limit Waldron to one hit while striking out four.

Lexie Hamilton had four hits and two RBIs. Viewegh had three hits and three RBIs.

Krise got the start in game two and pitched four innings and allowed six hits and two walks while striking out seven. Ollyvea Fiesbeck pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Kaitlyn Robbinson scored two runs and had three RBIs for Hauser (4-7, 3-3 MHC).

Waldron (5-3,0-2 MHC) is at Columbus Christian (0-2) Tuesday.

Triton Central 24, Irvington Prep 1

At Irvington Prep, a 16-run first inning propelled the Tigers to their seventh-straight win.

Ashlyn Hittle and Makinah Noel each had home runs for Triton Central (7-4). Gracie Craig had a double, a triple and drove in four runs. Gabriella Hixson and Lily Sheler each had three RBIs.

Mallory Diehl earned the win, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out five Ravens (1-7).

The Tigers host Indianapolis Scecina (1-7) today.

Girls tennis

Triton Central 4, New Castle 1

At Triton Central, two three-set matches highlighted the meeting between the Tigers and Trojans.

Triton Central got straight-set wins from Maryrose Felling at No. 1 singles, Zhibek Zhumaly at No. 3 singles and the No. 2 doubles pairing of Ellie Gast and Cadence Roberts.

Neve Kahler and Estelle Gearlds outlasted Cadence Armocast and Emma Harris at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 15-13.

New Castle’s lone win came at No. 2 singles where Ashlynn Blessinger defeated Anniston Evans, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Boys volleyball

Madison def. Shelbyville, 25-7, 25-11, 25-14

At Madison, Jay Kawakami had six kills and two service aces to lead the Golden Bears (1-18).
