Prep Report: Class 3A, No. 9 Shelbyville baseball completes sweep of Mt. Vernon

Class 3A, No. 9 Shelbyville scored four unearned runs in the third inning and Mt. Vernon never recovered Wednesday.

Gavin Reed and Luke Coomes combined to limit the Marauders to four hits and struck out nine in a 7-4 victory to win the Hoosier Heritage Conference series. Reed earned the win, going five innings, before Coomes worked a perfect final two innings and struck out four to improve Shelbyville to 5-0 (3-0 HHC).

Brady Bryant, Aiden Smith and Brayden Smith each had two hits. Aiden Smith had two doubles and is hitting .647 early in the season.

Ben Schaeffer took the loss for Mt. Vernon (5-3, 2-2 HHC), allowing four hits, striking out six and surrendering five runs, only one was earned.

Shelbyville puts its unbeaten start to the season on the line Saturday at Indian Creek (2-4).

Baseball

Beech Grove 12, Triton Central 7

At Beech Grove, the host Hornets scored three runs in three of the first four innings to secure a split of the Hoosier Legends Conference two-game series.

Bishop Moore hit for the cycle and drove in two runs. David Lepper and Mason Thacker each had two hits, including a double, and Thacker drove in three runs.

Moore earned the win on the mound, allowing no hits and striking out 10 in four innings for Beech Grove (6-1-1, 3-1 HLC).

Brayden Hoover took the loss for Triton Central (1-5, 1-3 HLC).

The Tigers travel to Charlottesville Saturday morning for a doubleheader against Eastern Hancock (3-0).

 Softball

Triton Central 16, Beech Grove 3

At Beech Grove, the visiting Tigers scored 10 runs in the first two innings and cruised to the HLC series sweep of the Hornets.

The Tigers hits five home runs – two by Ashlyn Hittle and one from Elly May, Makinah Noel and Marissa Williams. Hittle finished with a team-high four RBI and three runs scored.

Hailey Cooper earned the win, pitching a five-inning complete game. She allowed four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Beech Grove dropped to 2-9 (1-3 HLC).

Triton Central (3-4, 3-1 HLC) is at Heritage Christian (1-4) today.

Girls tennis

Shelbyville 4, Columbus East 1

At Columbus East Tuesday, the Golden Bears won both doubles matches and added victories from Ava Muckerheide and Sophia Asher to improve to 4-1 this season.

At No. 1 singles, Muckerheide cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win. Asher had to go three sets to win at No. 2 singles, 0-6, 7-6 (7) 10-7.

Mia Robbins was defeated at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 1 doubles, Reese Fortune and Megan Childres secured a 7-6 (5), 6-0 win. And Abby Huntsman and Ava Fralich won 6-1, 6-1.

The Golden Bears host Mt. Vernon today.
