North Vermillion has found its new football coach, as Nate Crum was recently hired to take over the Falcons.
Crum inherits a team that went 0-10 last season under Brian Crabtree, who left to take over at West Vigo. He spent last season as the defensive coordinator at North Montgomery High School.
Crum told The Parke County Post the more he learned about North Vermillion, the more excited he became.
"North Vermillion has a proud tradition of success, and the more I learned about the school, the administration, and the community support behind the players, the more I knew this was a place I wanted to be. This is a community that values its football program and invests in its young people. My staff and I are extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity, and we’ve already begun the work of building something the school and community can be proud of," Crum said.
Crum is not the only one excited, as North Vermillion athletic director Martin Brown is as well.
“We were looking for a leader who could ignite our program, build real relationships with our kids, and establish a clear identity for North Vermillion Football,” said Brown. “Coach Crum stood out throughout the process for his preparation, vision, and commitment to doing things the right way.”
Brown said Crum has built a reputation for energy, preparation, and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field.
"We were impressed not only by Nate’s football knowledge, but by the way he consistently brought everything back to our kids and our program. He has a plan, he has energy, and he has a genuine desire to invest in North Vermillion Football for the long term," Brown said.
Crum said it is his belief that strong programs are built on "clear, consistent systems."
"Our focus is creating structures that players understand and can execute with confidence. Clarity builds confidence, and confidence allows athletes to play fast and aggressive. We will emphasize development, accountability, and daily improvement so our players know exactly what’s expected and how to achieve it. When players feel prepared, they perform with energy and purpose and that’s what we’re building here," Crum acknowledged.
North Vermillion opens the season on Aug. 21 against North Central (Farmersburg). He said fans can expect a team that is energized and disciplined, as well as enjoying competing.
"We will play fast, physical, and aggressive, but most importantly, we will play for each other. Our goal is to represent North Vermillion with effort, toughness, and pride every time we step on the field," Crum said.
