Raymond Joseph “Ray” Barrett Jr., 77, of Shelbyville

Raymond Joseph “Ray” Barrett Jr., 77, of Shelbyville, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Cypress Run in Morristown.
He was born December 20, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Raymond J. and Margaret Mary (Gooder) Barrett.  On October 18, 1980, he married Cheri Ann Monroe, and she preceded  him in death on April 19, 2022.
Ray is survived by his brother, Mike Barrett and wife, Linda, of Greenfield; sister, Kathie Barrett of Florida; mother-in-law, Ruth Ann Monroe; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to Cheri, Ray was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Dale Monroe; and brother-in-law, Doug Monroe. He was also preceded in death by his friendly canine, Rusty.
Ray graduated in 1967, from Shelbyville High School and attended Vincennes University.
He was a devout member and supporter of Saint Joseph Catholic Church.
Ray was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Vietnam.
He retired in 2006, from Eli Lilly, with over 34 years of service.
Ray’s interest in trains was sparked at the young age of 7 years, when he was given a Lionel train set by his parents at Christmas.  This led to his tremendous collection and extensive knowledge of trains.  His interest continued to grow throughout his lifetime, as he studied the various details of trains and model trains.
He enjoyed bowling and playing softball.  Ray was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and  the  Green Bay Packers.
The devoted staff at Frensinius provided excellent care to Ray, during his dialysis treatments for nearly three years.  Ray was very fond of the staff at McKay Manor, where he enjoyed being well taken care of during his last year.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 pm, Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819  S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville, with the rosary recited at 1:30 pm
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am, Monday, April 13, 2026, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St., in Shelbyville, Indiana, with Father Mike Keucher officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
