D. Keith Nelson, 65, of Greencastle

D. Keith Nelson, 65, of Greencastle, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, at IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis, surrounded by the love of his family.

A devoted husband, proud father, beloved grandpa, loyal brother, and cherished friend, Keith lived a life marked by kindness, integrity, and unwavering generosity. His quiet strength, steady presence, and warm heart left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him.

Keith was born in Greencastle on November 25, 1959, to Darell “Pete” and Marcia (Bettis) Nelson. He graduated from Greencastle High School in 1979 and married Cindy O’Daniel in 1980. Together they welcomed a son, W. Shane Nelson.

After a time in Kentucky, Keith returned to Greencastle and served as a Greencastle City police officer before beginning a long and distinguished career at Lonestar (now Buzzi). Over his 36 years there, Keith rose to the position of Regional Terminal Manager, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout the region. Known for his dedication, humility, and work ethic, Keith was not just a leader—he was a mentor and a friend.

In 1997, Keith met Kristi Gould and they were married July 14, 2001 and together they built a beautiful life full of laughter, adventure, and love. The two shared a passion for travel, long walks at the Nature Center, and biking trips in Hilton Head. One of Keith’s greatest joys came from time spent with his grandchildren. Whether cheering at baseball games, attending dance recitals, splashing in the pool, or wrestling on the living room floor, “Grandpa Indiana” was a constant source of fun, wisdom, and unconditional love. Keith’s legacy is one of quiet courage, faithful service, and wholehearted love.

He is survived by his devoted wife Kristi (Gould) Nelson of Greencastle; his son Shane (Sara) Nelson of Cincinnati, OH; and two adored grandchildren, Thomas and Cynthia Nelson. He also leaves behind his sister Karen (Jerry) Birt, brother Kris (Jill) Nelson, and a large extended family including in-laws Jody (Brett) Wilson, Tim (Mary) Gould, Rita Schendel (Bob Calvert), Connie O’Daniel, Jackie Gullet, and Michael (Sara) O’Daniel, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Keith was preceded in death by his grandparents Louis and Eunice Nelson, and Noel and Daitha Bettis; his parents, Pete and Marcia Nelson; his first wife, Cindy; his father-in-law Tommy O’Daniel; his brother-in-law Sam O’Daniel; and his great-nephew Brighton Birt.

Visitation will be held at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle on Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, followed by a memorial service from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.

In a final act of generosity, Keith donated his body to science to aid in the search for answers to MPN disorders. In his memory, donations may be made to MPNResearchFoundation.org.

Keith’s life was a gift to all who knew him, and his memory will continue to inspire kindness, courage, and love in the hearts of many.
