Bruce Edward Schwomeyer was called home on Saturday, April 25, 2026, after a long, hard fought battle with cancer.
Born on May 4, 1956, Bruce (aka Brucie, Uncle Deucer, Papa Bear), made his debut at Putnam County Hospital, as the proud son of Betty Lou Shrader Schwomeyer and Joseph Schwomeyer Junior. He was a mischievous, fun-loving soul who excelled in wrestling and band in high school (math, not so much), graduating in 1974, from Cloverdale High School. An aspiring musician, Bruce headed west soon after graduation, to follow his dream of becoming a professional musician. He settled in Las Vegas, where he lived for over a decade, working as a pool manager while honing his songwriting and performing skills. He did experience some success in copyrighting, selling and recording his songs but returned to Indiana in the mid 80s to be near his family.
Bruce ran his own carpet cleaning business for years before working at Leer as a supervisor for more than a decade. He was a devoted son, a fun-loving uncle, brother, and friend, with an affinity for cooking and whiskey. His love of music remained with him throughout his life, and he shared that gift with others as often as he could.
Bruce was the primary caregiver for his mother, Betty Lou, in her later years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Betty Lou, and his big brother Gary. He is survived by his non-biological, but much-loved children, Joe (Abigail) Schwomeyer, Nick (Gina) Schwomeyer, Megan (Jeremy) Barton, his siblings, Dedee, Donna, Jessie (Pat), Diana (David), Travis and Denise, as well as many nieces, nephews, and grands. Bruce will be sorely missed and eternally loved. We are grateful that he is pain free, at peace, and reunited with family.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Whitaker’s Funeral Home in Cloverdale, from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
