It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Sword, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and treasured great-grandmother.
Barbara passed away surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and unwavering devotion.
Barbara was the beloved wife of John Thomas Sword, with whom she shared a life rich in love and partnership.
She was a nurturing and proud mother to her children: John Edward Tharp (wife Sandy Kay Tharp), Christy Ann Gillen (husband Joshua Gillen), David Arnold Tharp (wife Rebecca Elizabeth Tharp), and Richard Eugene Sword. Her joy multiplied through her grandchildren: John Edward Tharp Jr., Leslie Daniele Tharp, Caleb Miller, Jacob Miller, Alyssa Rawles, Brenden Tharp, Nicholas Tharp, Sophia Messina, Jordan Gillen, Taylor Gillen, and Olivia Gill. She was further blessed with great-grandchildren Benjamin Tharp and Samuel Tharp, whose laughter and energy brought her endless delight, and another great-grandchild due in February.
Barbara is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David Pennington and Marilyn Pennington, and her brother, Tom Pennington.
Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life. Barbara will be remembered not only for her gentle spirit and unwavering faith, but also for her zest for life. She was an avid camper, always eager to explore the outdoors and find peace in nature. She loved to fish, finding joy in quiet moments by the water. Her baking brought warmth and comfort to family gatherings, and her love of reading reflected her curious mind and thoughtful soul.
Above all, Barbara found deep joy and fellowship in her Christian family, whose love and support enriched her life and strengthened her faith. Her favorite Bible verse was Psalm 23 from the New King James Version, a passage that brought her peace and comfort throughout her life: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake…”
