The world's largest operating steam locomotive is rolling into Marshall County this week, and the Town of Argos is pulling out all the stops to welcome it.
Union Pacific's iconic "Big Boy" No. 4014 is expected to arrive in Argos at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, as part of a coast-to-coast tour celebrating America's 250th anniversary. The locomotive is expected to slow roll or make a brief stop at the South Michigan Street crossing.
However, visitors should be aware of a last-minute location change. The full-service stop — originally planned for downtown — has been moved to the Ironwood Road crossing, approximately three miles east of the Marshall County Fairgrounds. The Town of Argos acknowledged the change on its Facebook page, noting: "We know that the full-service stop being changed at the last minute is disappointing for some; however, we fully believe that in town will still be a great area to view the train."
Built in 1941 and designed to haul heavy freight across the rugged terrain of the American West, Big Boy No. 4014 is a legendary piece of American railroad history. Measuring 133 feet in length and weighing approximately 1.2 million pounds, it is one of the largest steam locomotives ever constructed. Following a multi-year restoration, Union Pacific returned the historic engine to service in 2019, where it has since become a must-see attraction for railroaders and rail enthusiasts around the world.
Thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond are expected to descend on Argos for the occasion. To complement the event, a special Farmers Market will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Nickel Plate Square in downtown Argos, featuring local vendors and a festive atmosphere. Multiple local restaurants will be open throughout the day, and food vendors will also be on hand to serve the crowds.
After leaving Argos, Big Boy No. 4014 will continue east to Fort Wayne before pressing on to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rail fans who miss it this week will have another opportunity — the locomotive is scheduled to make a westbound stop in Knox on July 16 as it heads back toward Chicago.
All train times are approximate and subject to change. Anyone planning to view the train near the tracks is reminded to stay at least 25 feet back at all times and to follow all instructions from railroad personnel and local authorities.
