A major winter storm blanketed the entire GIANT-FM listening area including Lawrence County with over a foot of snow from Saturday through Sunday afternoon.
The heavy snowfall left major highways snow packed, while secondary and rural county roads remain snow covered and, in some cases, impassable. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) reports that they are struggling to make progress due to the extreme cold temperatures and strong winds are compounding the problem causing blowing and drifting in several locations.
The heavy snow and extreme cold caused the closing of Unit 10 and 20 schools both Monday and Tuesday in Lawrence County. Authorities in Lawrence County and across the region are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, if possible.
