Driving on snowy or icy roads requires special attention to safety. Although it's impossible to have ideal road conditions 365 days a year, there are certain precautions you can take to make winter driving safer. Here are some tips and suggestions to help you prepare for winter hazards.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Indiana State Police (ISP), and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) recommend the following precautions for all Hoosiers:
- Slow down and adjust your speed to road conditions, especially on snow-covered roads.
- Know before you go, check conditions and forecasts before you hit the road; allow plenty of time to reach your destination safely.
- Don’t crowd the plow. Never tailgate or drive beside a snowplow.
- Leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you; it takes additional time and distance to stop or slow down on snowy roads.
- Prepare an emergency kit with snacks, water, a phone charger, sand or cat litter, flares or bright LED alternatives, a flashlight, and blankets or extra clothing.
- Keep your vehicles maintained. Keep your vehicle full of gas and check your battery, fluids, and spare tire.
- Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle’s windows, lights, and signals.
While driving, reduce your speed. Drive slower than you usually would, especially on bridges, ramps, and shady spots where ice can form. Drivers should increase their following distance. It is recommended to leave at least 10 times the usual distance, or 8 seconds, between your vehicle and the one in front of you. You should avoid sudden movements, accelerate, brake, and steer gently to maintain traction, and avoid using cruise control.
Be aware of black ice. Be cautious on roads that appear clear but can be slick, especially at intersections, on bridges, and in shady areas. If you skid, take your foot off the gas and brake, and steer in the direction of the skid.
