On July 12th, Plymouth Building Commissioner Dennis Manuwal received a complaint regarding unsafe building conditions at The Pointe apartment complex, located at 309 Gibson Street in Plymouth. Following an inspection conducted jointly by the Marshall County Health Department and the City of Plymouth Building Commission, it was determined that stray electrical current was being conducted through metal pipes within the building. As a result, the Building Commissioner promptly issued an order to shut off the electricity until the problem could be rectified. This resulted in the displacement of residents due to the lack of electricity.
Although the electrical issues were made safe and electricity was restored, further unsafe conditions were uncovered during the repair process. Notably, a damaged and leaking roof was identified. While working with a roofing contractor to assess the necessary repairs, additional unsafe conditions were revealed.
On July 30th, the Building Commissioner issued an Order to Vacate the building until all unsafe conditions could be addressed and rectified. Until the necessary repairs are completed, it is deemed unsafe for residents to return to The Pointe.
Community organizations such as United Way, Link to Hope, and Center Township Trustee have collaborated to assist residents in finding temporary housing solutions while repairs are ongoing. The City of Plymouth remains actively engaged with the property owner to determine the feasibility and timeline for making the building habitable and safe.
