Law enforcement in the city of Sumner has gotten a boost after action Tuesday night by the city council.

They approved the hiring of one full-time and one part-time officer to the police department. The moves were made after a two-month hiring process and with the recommendation of the police committee.

Carleton Vantlin will work full-time for the city. He was officially sworn in by Police Chief Doyel Hoffman and will begin his new duties once the state waiver process is completed. Vantlin is a Grayville, Ill native who now resides in Bridgeport. He has had previous law enforcement experience and is already certified.

Blaine Winningham will join the department as a part-time officer. He is a Lawrenceville native.
