Suspect in custody following pursuit through Elkhart and Marshall Counties

An Indianapolis man is in custody following a pursuit that initially began in the city of Elkhart and ultimately ended with a crash in Marshall County.

Wednesday morning, at approximately 8 a.m., the Indiana State Police received information about a stolen 2023 Ford Edge that was involved in a pursuit with the Elkhart Police Department on Oct. 1.

During this pursuit, a juvenile standing at a bus stop stumbled or fell while trying to avoid the fleeing vehicle. The side of the Ford struck this juvenile as it sped past. The Elkhart Police Department then terminated the pursuit.

At approximately 8:35 a.m., the Indiana State Police received information that the stolen vehicle was possibly located at a gas station near the intersection of U.S. 6 and Michigan Road in LaPaz. Trooper Andy Barker responded to the area and confirmed that this was the vehicle involved in the pursuit in Elkhart.  As Barker and a Marshall County Deputy arrived, the Ford fled southbound on Michigan Road.

As the Ford fled southbound on Michigan Road, the driver began to drive southbound in the northbound lane. A trooper approaching from the south had to move off the roadway and onto the shoulder to avoid being struck by the fleeing Ford. 

The driver of the Ford continued southbound, approaching the roundabout for Veterans Parkway, just north of Plymouth. As the Ford approached this intersection, the driver swerved toward another police vehicle and then drove into a ditch toward two Plymouth police officers who were attempting to deploy stop sticks. These officers were able to run out of the way to avoid being hit.

The Ford continued southbound in the ditch and then struck a white Toyota Prius that was approaching the roundabout from the east. This caused the Ford to spin and come to a stop on the southeast side of the roundabout. Officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Plymouth Police Department, and Indiana State Police were able to box the vehicle in.

The driver, identified as Jamarius Bryant, 37, of Indianapolis, kicked out a rear window of the Ford and then fled on foot southbound. Bryant was then tazed and taken into custody.

After being medically cleared, he was taken to the Marshall County Jail for attempted murder, resisting law enforcement, and theft.
