On June 21, the Marshall County Solid Waste District hosted a waste tire amnesty day for Marshall County residents at the Recycle Depot, 1900 Walter Glaub Drive, Plymouth, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This event was made possible through a grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and in partnership with Liberty Tire Recycling. Over 2,300 tires were collected from county residents at no charge. The tires will be ground up and recycled into material for roads, roofing, athletic tracks, footwear, and fuel.
Marianne Peters, Marshall County Solid Waste District Director, expressed her gratitude for the $8,000 grant that covered the cost of two 53-foot trailers and an additional trailer for the highway department’s waste tire collection. It also covered the labor of four Liberty Tire employees, who made sure the tires were loaded quickly, safely, and efficiently.
Waste tires are not only an eyesore but also a health hazard, according to Peters. “Tires collect water, and in the spring, that produces a lot of mosquito larvae,” said Peters. “Getting tires cleaned up is better for everyone, especially those of us who like to be outside!”
Peters hopes to offer another tire amnesty day next year if the IDEM grant is available; the grant is only provided to solid waste management districts.
If you missed the amnesty event, you could still bring cars and light truck tires to the Recycle Depot all year long. During regular hours, residents can drop off up to five tires per month for $5 each.
