Strong storms batter Lawrence County

A line of strong thunderstorms rolled through Lawrence County Monday, July 27th bringing with it strong winds, heavy rainfall and extensive lighting.

The system moved south through south-central parts of the county at around 25 m.p.h. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued severe thunderstorm warnings and then a tornado warning around 8:30 p.m. CDT when some circulation was spotted on radar in a storm located east of Bridgeport and west of Lawrenceville. That set off the warning sirens at Lawrenceville. There was, however, no immediate confirmation of a tornado. The all-clear was issued by the NWS around 9 p.m. CDT.

There were no reports of serious damage or injuries. The Lawrence-Allison Fire Protection District was mobilized during the storm when an electrical transformer caught fire near 9th and Christy Streets in Lawrenceville. Damage assessments and cleanup were underway on Tuesday, July 28th
