Special Olympics Indiana Marshall & Starke County concludes successful fall bowling season

Marshall & Starke County Special Olympics athletes, coaches, and volunteers recently wrapped up a highly successful fall bowling season, culminating in the county’s annual bowling tournament held at Bowl Away Lanes in Knox.

Athletes participated in eight weeks of weekly practices before competing in the season-ending tournament. Fall bowling continues to be the most popular sport in Marshall & Starke County, with over 60 athletes participating this season. Due to the high level of interest, practices were hosted at two locations: King Pin Lanes in Plymouth and Bowl Away Lanes in Knox. Practices were held every Saturday and included both individual bowlers and ramp bowlers, ensuring opportunities for athletes of all ability levels.

On Saturday, 55 athletes came together for the Marshall & Starke County Annual Bowling Tournament. The day began with opening ceremonies, the recitation of the Special Olympics Athlete Oath, and a performance of the National Anthem by special guest Alyssa Jo Smith. Competition followed, with individual bowlers competing in three games and ramp bowlers competing in two games. Athletes were divided by ability level and concluded the event with an awards ceremony recognizing their hard work and accomplishments.

The success of the event was made possible by the dedication of coaches, volunteers, lane assistants, awards presenters, speakers, and event staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes before, during, and after the tournament. Special Olympics Indiana, Marshall & Starke County, also extends sincere appreciation to the Koontz Lake Lions Club, whose members volunteered their time to support the athletes throughout the day.

“Our goal is always to have fun, and I think we did just that,” said County Coordinator Jackie Ziaja. “Spectators brought Christmas accessories for the athletes to wear, the music was playing, the dance moves were incredible, and the smiles and high-fives were endless. The looks on our athletes’ faces say it all — this is truly an experience everyone should be a part of.”
