It won't be long now before the area around DePauw University sees a giant facelift.

The university and City of Greencastle recently selected Indianapolis based Buckingham Companies to serve as the development partner for the planned Seminary Square mixed-use project.

It is the hope of both city and college officials that the development will serve as a "vibrant, mixed-use district," which will bring residential, commercial and community changes to the area between DePauw's campus and Greencastle's downtown area.

The project calls for two new residential buildings, totaling 120 units. In addition, there is green space, parking and the addition of an oncampus bookstore. Under the proposed development, the two blocks between Seminary and Poplar streets will be impacted, while Vine Street will be converted to pedestrian traffic.

As part of the project, Ashley Square Cinema will be razed and the theater will be relocated downtown as a one-screen, 100-seat operation in the Eli’s Books building at 6 E. Washington St.

“We are excited to meet the next milestone in this incredible project,” Growing Green and Gold Together Project Director and Community Liaison Jason Chew said. “Throughout the proposal process, Buckingham Companies demonstrated their experience in mixed-use development, deep commitment to fostering strong community ties, and an understanding of the needs of Greencastle and DePauw, making them the right choice for this initiative.”
