The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving callers who are posing as corrections officers, sheriff’s deputies, or other law enforcement personnel.
Scammers may claim that you or a loved one has an outstanding bond, warrant, or other legal matter and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest or additional consequences. They may ask for payment by phone, gift cards, cryptocurrency, money transfers, or other unusual methods.
Be aware of the following if you receive such a call:
Law enforcement will not demand immediate bond payment over the phone using threats or intimidation.
Do not provide your Social Security number, bank information, passwords, or other personal information to an unsolicited caller.
Do not send money or provide gift card numbers to someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and independently contact the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office using an official phone number to verify the information. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency and your financial institution as soon as possible.
Remember that scammers can spoof phone numbers and may have some basic information about you or your family. That does not mean the call is legitimate.
