The Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals voted unanimously Tuesday evening to approve a variance from the development standard for Adam and Jessica Sliter, clearing the way for the couple to operate a home occupation within an accessory structure on their property at 14417 5C Road.
The request required board review because of the size of the structure. City standards state that a home occupation shall not occupy an area in excess of 25% of all floor area of the dwelling. The accessory structure measures 35' x 70', with the front portion of 25' x 35' serving as the area where the home occupation would operate. Because the proposed business space exceeded the standard threshold, Plan Director Ty Adley recommended that the case come before the BZA for interpretation of the request.
The only person to speak during the public hearing was City Building Inspector Dennis Manuwal, who asked how many people would be in the business at any given time.
The Sliters explained that they have operated a massage and esthetic business inside their home and now want to move the business outside of the home. The operation is run by one employee who works by appointment, meaning there would only be one customer at a time.
With no further questions from the board or the public, the Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals approved the staff's recommendation to grant the variance request by a 4-0 vote.
