Owen County man charged with sexual crimes against children

An Owen County man with past ties to a Cloverdale youth sports league is facing a litany of charges for actions against children.

According to Owen County Prosecutor Benjamin Kim, eight counts of criminal information was recently filed against Charles "Chip" May. 

May has been charged with two Level 4 felony counts of child molesting, a Level 5 felony charge of child solicitation, a Level 5 felony charge of sexual misconduct with a minor, a Level 6 felony charge of performing sexual conduct in the presence of a minor, a Level 6 felony charge of dissemination of matter harmful to minors; a Level 6 felony charge of intimidation, and a class A misdemeanor of distribution of an intimate image. 

In 2012, May was arrested on four sex related charges pertaining to an alleged improper relationship and contact with an 11-year old girl at an Indiana State Park. Indiana State Conservation Officers embarked on a four month investigation that netted the arrest of May after receiving a complaint from the juvenile's parents, who stated May exposed himself routinely on a horse trail at McCormick's Creek State Park. At the time, May was responsible for guiding trail rides at McCormick's Creek and was later banned from being on any property owned or leased by DNR. 

May also had ties to the Cloverdale Community Youth League, where he was served as a coach. The Youth League issued a statement on social media stating the league takes the "safety and well-being of all children in our programs very seriously."

"Recently, concerns have been raised regarding a former coach who has been charged with serious offenses. We understand the community's concern and want to address this matter directly," league officials stated. 

The statement notes the Cloverdale Community Youth League completed a background check when the individual applied to coach. 

"At that time, there were no criminal records, pending charges, or findings that would have prevented their participation as a volunteer coach. Based on the information available then, there was no legal or factual basis to deny their involvement. We are deeply saddened to learn of the recent charges. While we cannot comment on any ongoing investigations, this individual has been immediately removed from any role within the Youth League pending full resolution of the matter,. We remain committed to protecting every child who participates in our programs and to maintaining transparency with our community. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work together to uphold a safe and positive environment for all youth athletes," the statement continues.
