Problems with three water wells that serve the city of Lawrenceville with its drinking water led the city council to spend $52,000 for preventative maintenance work.
They took the action Thursday after receiving a report on the situation from Water Superintendent Aaron Tipsword. Mayor David Courtney emphasized that the quality of the water is not being affected. The work will center around mechanical issues with the well pumps and help to avoid any iron buildup or other problems and ensure that there will be sufficient capacity to serve the city water customers.
The council did vote 5-2 to not change its current employee payroll timekeeping system and not implement a time clock.
They moved to advertise for bids to repair the Armory roof and also approved the purchase of a cemetery excavator for $43,000.
Mayor Courtney also indicated that no decision has been made on a recommendation for a candidate to fill the alderman vacancy in Ward 1. There is a 60-day window in which to recommend a replacement by the mayor. A special session could be called in the future to handle the matter.
