Motorists traveling between North Liberty and South Bend should prepare for upcoming traffic changes, as the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced extensive road work along State Road 23.
Beginning on or after Wednesday, April 8, INDOT contractor Milestone Contractors LP will implement lane closures on State Road 23 between Wolf Street in North Liberty and Olive Street/Locust Road in South Bend.
During this time, State Road 23 will be reduced to a single lane in the active work zones, with flaggers on-site to direct traffic. The closures are necessary to facilitate road resurfacing, as well as road widening in select locations along this stretch of the highway.
As part of the same contract, crews will also conduct a small structure replacement between U.S. 20/31 and Ireland Road. This phase of the project will require a full closure of State Road 23, which is currently scheduled to begin in late May.
During the full closure, the official detour route will direct traffic along U.S. 20/31, U.S. 31, and State Road 4.
The resurfacing work is expected to be ongoing through the end of November.
INDOT strongly encourages drivers to allow extra travel time when navigating through this area and to follow all traffic directions carefully. Motorists are reminded to slow down, exercise caution, and drive distraction-free through all work zones to ensure the safety of both construction crews and other drivers.
